Why I stopped setting business goals
Feb 13, 2025I'm The Real Jason Duncan here with Beyond the Grind, where we help entrepreneurs build thriving businesses without sacrificing their freedom. 🚀
Previously, we talked about building systems that let your business run without you. Now, here’s something controversial: Setting business goals might be keeping you trapped in those systems.
Let me explain.
I used to be the king of goal-setting. Revenue goals, growth goals, expansion goals—I had them all neatly written in my planner. I even hit most of them.
But something was wrong. Despite hitting my goals, I was working more hours, not fewer. My business was bigger, but not better. I was achieving more but enjoying it less.
Then I discovered the fundamental flaw in goal-setting.
The Goal-Setting Trap 🎯
Most goals focus on destinations without mapping the journey. It's like saying, "I want to visit Hawaii" without considering:
- How you'll get there
- What you'll need
- Who will handle things while you're gone
- Whether Hawaii is even the right destination
Sound familiar?
Strategic Planning: The Better Way 🗺️
Strategic planning is different. Instead of just setting a destination, it:
- Maps the entire journey
- Considers all resources needed
- Plans for obstacles
- Creates sustainable systems
- Builds in flexibility
Think of it this way: Goals tell you where to go, but strategy shows you how to get there while building a better business along the way.
Three Strategic Planning Principles 📋
-
Start with the End in Mind 🎬
- What does freedom look like?
- What kind of business supports that freedom?
- What systems need to be in place?
-
Work Backward ⏮️
- What needs to change first?
- Who needs to be involved?
- What resources are required?
-
Build in Reality Checks 🔍
- Monthly progress reviews
- Quarterly strategy adjustments
- Annual vision alignment
Why This Matters 💡
Here's what separates strategic planning from goal-setting:
-
Goals say: "Increase revenue by 30%."
- Strategy asks: "What systems, people, and processes need to be in place to sustainably grow without sacrificing freedom?"
-
Goals say: "Work fewer hours."
- Strategy asks: "How can the business be restructured to run efficiently without constant oversight?"
-
Goals say: "Delegate more."
- Strategy asks: "What needs to be documented, systematized, and taught to build a self-running team?"
The XOS™ Difference 🚀
In The Exiter Club, members move beyond simple goal-setting to true strategic planning. This means:
- Creating clear implementation roadmaps
- Building sustainable systems
- Developing accountable teams
- Establishing measurable milestones
But most importantly, it means designing a business that serves life, not the other way around.
Your Strategic Journey 🗺️
If traditional goal-setting has been frustrating, try this:
- Take a major business goal.
- Ask these key questions:
- What systems need to be in place to achieve this?
- Who needs to be involved?
- What needs to change first?
- Map out the steps between here and there.
This simple shift in thinking can transform how business growth is approached.
Here's to your success,
