He escaped poverty in Communist China with $50 in his pocket, earned two doctorates from Harvard and MIT, and invented a technology that has restored sight to millions around the world. His life story became a feature film starring Greg Kinnear. Today, he shares how he went from darkness to sight ? literally and figuratively.
Dr. Ming Wang is a Harvard- and MIT-trained physician (MD) and one of the few laser eye surgeons in the world to hold a doctorate in laser physics. The film Sight, distributed by Angel Studios, is based on Dr. Wang?s autobiography, From Darkness to Sight, and co-stars Greg Kinnear. As a teenager, Dr. Wang faced poverty and hardship in China before coming to America with only $50. He went on to earn two doctorate degrees?one in laser physics and one in medicine?and graduated with the highest honors from both Harvard Medical School and MIT. Dr. Wang invented the amniotic membrane contact lens and donated the patents to the world. This innovation has been used by tens of thousands of eye doctors across nearly every nation, helping millions of patients regain their sight. Through the Wang Foundation for Sight Restoration, patients from over 40 U.S. states and 55 countries have received free sight-restoration surgeries. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to helping blind and orphaned children worldwide, Dr. Wang was named Kiwanis Nashvillian of the Year.
