About this Episode

In Episode 372 of The Real Jason Duncan Podcast, you signed your name, walked out on your own, and called it freedom. So why does it feel like the business owns you instead?

Two hundred and fifty years ago this week, Thomas Jefferson sat in a hot rented room in Philadelphia and signed a document that could have gotten him hanged. That signature didn’t make anybody free , not that day. The actual winning took seven more brutal years. The declaration cost an afternoon. Securing it cost just about everything they had.

You made a similar pledge the day you bet on yourself and started your own company. No more boss. No more permission slips. And it felt huge.

But if being your own boss made you free, why does it so often feel like the business owns you instead of the other way around?

In this solo Wednesday episode drawn from his What’s Real newsletter, Jason exposes the lie hiding inside entrepreneurial independence , why most business owners have built a declaration with no war behind it, what the numbers say about owner-dependent businesses, and what it actually takes to go from signing the paper to winning the freedom.

In this episode, Jason covers:

What Thomas Jefferson’s declaration has to do with the day you started your business

Why signing the paper was never the freedom , and what the actual fight looks like

The one sentence Jason’s business coach said that cracked everything wide open

Why only 20-30% of businesses that go up for sale ever actually sell , and the number one reason the rest don’t

Why 80% of most owners’ net worth is locked inside the one thing they can’t step away from

The difference between ambition and a declaration with no war behind it

What James figured out by year four , and what it cost him to build the way out on purpose

What Proverb 14:12 says about the road that feels like freedom and where it actually leads

Declaring it cost an afternoon. Securing it costs everything you have. This episode is about finally starting the fight.

Welcome to The Real Jason Duncan Podcast.

Today's episode is a Wednesday Special Edition. Every week I write a newsletter called What's Real? where I expose the lies most people believe and reveal the truths they were never taught. And every Wednesday, I bring that week's edition to you in audio, right here.

Because the most dangerous lies don't look like lies. They look like golden cages. They look like success. The most successful people are the most deceived, because the lies that trap them look like achievements. That's what this whole show is about.

On Mondays I sit down with somebody who believed one of those lies and discovered the truth the hard way. Wednesdays, like today, I bring you the Wednesday Special Edition. Either way, the mission is the same.

This week's post is called "Being Your Own Boss Didn't Make You Free."

Two hundred and fifty years ago this week, a thirty-three-year-old named Thomas Jefferson sat in a hot little rented room in Philadelphia, and he ended a long document with a single line that could have gotten him hanged. He pledged his life, his fortune, and his sacred honor. And he meant it literally, because back then the penalty for treason against the king wasn't prison. It was the rope.

And even while he's sitting there writing those words, the largest invasion fleet the British had ever sent across an ocean is dropping anchor right off the coast of New York. So that signature didn't make anybody free. Not that day. It was a pledge to go win freedom, signed by men who had no guarantee they'd even live long enough to collect on it. And the actual winning took seven more years. Seven brutal years of war, all the way to seventeen eighty-three.

You made the same kind of pledge. The day you bet on yourself and started your own thing, that was your declaration of independence. No more boss. No more permission slips. And man, it felt huge.

So let me ask you the question this whole episode is really about. If being your own boss made you free, then why does it so often feel like the business owns you instead of the other way around?

I lived in that gap for years. I'd built a multimillion-dollar company, made the Inc. five thousand list, had the awards up on the wall, and I still felt completely stuck inside my own success. And then one day my business coach said one sentence that cracked the whole thing wide open. He said, "Jason, the reason you want out is the same reason no one would want in."

Let that one sit for a second.

What he meant was the business was completely dependent on me. Every real decision ran straight through my office. I was the safety net and the single point of failure at the very same time. I'd built myself a golden cage. A company that looked like success on the outside and ran like a prison on the inside, and I'd welded those bars shut myself, one good decision at a time.

And if that's you, you are not alone in there. The numbers are kind of brutal. Only about twenty to thirty percent of the businesses that go up for sale ever actually sell. The rest don't, and the number one reason is the business is too dependent on the owner to survive without him. And for most owners, something like eighty percent of their entire net worth is locked up inside that one business. So the very thing you can't step away from is also the thing holding most of your money hostage.

I'll be straight with you. You've probably been saying you want out for years. More time, more freedom, a business that doesn't need you for every little thing. And then every single morning you walk right back in and run it exactly the way you always have. Same questions, same fires. And you call that ambition. It's not ambition. It's a declaration with no war behind it.

The colonists didn't get free by signing a piece of paper and going home. They got free by fighting for seven hard years for the thing they said they wanted. Declaring it cost them an afternoon. Securing it cost them just about everything they had.

So what do you actually do about it? You start the fight. You pick the one thing that breaks the worst the second you step away, and you start building it so it runs without you. That's the whole game. I teach about a guy I call James, who figured this out early, and by year four his company ran just fine without him in the building, so he could go coach his kid's ball team and actually be there for it. Same business, same wind. He just built a way out on purpose. Awareness is the key to recovery. And if you've listened this far, you just got aware.

There's a proverb that nails this. Proverbs fourteen, verse twelve. "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." The way that seems right is being your own boss and grinding away forever to prove you earned it. It feels like the road to freedom. But for way too many owners, it's the road to a cage they'll defend right up until it costs them their health, or their marriage, or the whole business. Seeing that path for what it really is, that's how you finally stop walking down it.

This whole episode is about the difference between something that actually frees you and something that quietly owns you. And that's not just true of your business. It's true of your money too. Which brings me to this week's sponsor.

I'm a practicing Bank On Yourself client. Bank On Yourself is a branded version of what's called infinite banking, where you use specially designed whole life insurance as your own private financing system. You build cash value in a policy that grows tax-deferred, on a guaranteed contractual basis, with the potential for dividends on top.

It doesn't drop when the market drops, and it grows whether you're working or not. And when you need capital for an opportunity, you borrow against your own cash value, on your own terms, and the policy keeps growing as if you never touched it. That's money that answers to you, instead of the other way around.

My financial advisor is Mark Willis at Lake Growth Financial. If you want to find out what this could look like for your situation, you can get a free consultation with Mark by going to therealjasonduncan.com/bankonyourself. That's therealjasonduncan.com/bankonyourself. Link is in the show notes.

Build wealth that serves your life, not the other way around.

That's a wrap on this Wednesday special edition. If today you saw a bar on your cage you hadn't noticed before, if you've been calling it freedom while it actually runs your life, send this episode to one person who needs to hear it before they spend another year polishing the same cage.

The gold is the lie.

As always, I am your host, The Real Jason Duncan, and Jesus is King.
